Quia Instuctions (7th & 8th Grade)

One of the tools we will be using in Spanish class is the website Quia, where I will be posting games and activities to practice, as well as occasional online quizzes.  All students have received a username and password to use Quia throughout the year, and have taped cards with this information into both their planners and their Spanish binders.  For future reference, here are the instructions for using Quia throughout the year:

  • Go to the link: http://www.quia.com/web/studentZoneBegin.html (you may want to bookmark this on your computer).
  • You must use your username and password to sign in to get credit for the time you spend there (don’t forget the “996” at the end of your username!”).
  • Once you sign in, click on the link after “Class Web Page.”  There, you will find all the activities for the current chapter.

8th Grade Class Work 5.29.15: La Comida y el Internet

In class on Friday, you will be assigned a restaurant in Barcelona, and will spend time in class exploring the website to answer questions about that restaurant.  The links to the restaurants are below:

  1. Disfrutar: http://es.disfrutarbarcelona.com/
  1. Los Caracoles: http://www.loscaracoles.es/index.php/es.html
  1. Casa Calvet: http://www.casacalvet.es/index.php?lang=es
  1. 4 Gats: http://4gats.com/es/
  1. Barceloneta: http://www.restaurantbarceloneta.com/inicio/
  1. Els Pescadors: http://www.elspescadors.com/es/home
  1. 7 Portes: http://www.7portes.com/castellano/index.php

Many of the homepages for these websites offer the option of “English, Castellano, Catalá” (“English, Spanish, Catalán, each in the respective languages).  Remember, Catalán is the other language spoken in Catalunya, the region of Spain where Barcelona is located.  Be sure to select “Castellano,” which means “Castillian,” another way of referring to the Spanish language. Be honest.  If your website offers an English option and you do the assignment through that link, you may complete the worksheet, but you haven’t gotten the practice.  When you travel, this is exactly the kind of thing you need to be able to figure out en epañol!

When you are finished with your questions, give your completed paper to the substitute and either work on one of the extra credit assignments, or play Spanish games on Quia.

Year-End Extra Credit (7th and 8th)

Both junior high grades have the opportunity to earn extra credit points before grades close for the 4th marking period.  All students were given a paper with three optional assignments, each worth 1% added to their final grades.  They may complete one, two, three, or none of these.

Deadlines: The due date for 7th grade is June 2nd, and the date for 8th grade is June 3rd (you have an extra day due to Boston, but it would be great to get it in before the trip).  Extra credit will not be accepted late; it is up to you to make this a priority!  8th grade absences on June 3rd will not be an excuse for late work; it you think you will be out on the day after Boston, make a point of getting your work in on the Monday.  The descriptions of the assignments are below.

1.  Flash Cards

Make flash cards for the current vocab list (Chapter 2-3 for 7th grade, Chapter 5-1 for 8th).  You must make cards for the whole list and bring them in to show me.  This has been an offer all year long, but I am extending the deadline for the most recent chapter.

2.  Photo Description

Pick a photo of a person or people.  It can be a photo of your own or something you find online.  Write paragraph about the photo, describing the appearance, clothing, and personalities of the people in the picture.  Print out the picture and attach it to the paragraph to turn in.

3.  Illustration

This is a drawing assignment.  If you choose this option, I will give you three descriptions of people in Spanish for you to draw and illustrate in color.  You may also download the descriptions here.

Gaudí Classwork 5.15.15 (8th Grade)

Today, you will each be visiting the websites for two other buildings designed by Gaudí:  Casa Milà (also known as “La Pedrera”) and Casa Batlló.

Casa Milà Official Website

Casa Batlló Official Website

You will make a PowerPoint presentation with the following elements:

  • Title Slide: Name of the house, your name, and the date
  • Slide 2: Address of the house and date that it was built
  • Slides 3-8: Pictures of a room or element of the house with a caption labeling it in Spanish (ventana, comedor, escaleras, etc.).  You may also include some interesting information about this feature in English, if you wish.

Save your PowerPoint on your student account and/or flash drive, and we will complete them on Monday.

Telenovela Project (8th Grade)

This week, 8th grade began work on their telenovela projects, the major Spanish project of the year.  For this projects, students will work in groups of 3-5 to write and perform a telenovela. They may perform it as a skit in class or film it and present it as a movie.  They must follow a specific genre of telenovela and use certain language concepts that we have learned in the most recent chapter.

A telenovela is a Latin American soap opera, literally, “television novel.”  These shows are an integral part of the culture in these countries.  Unlike American soap operas, telenovelas are hugely popular, and are shown during prime time.  In fact, one president once rescheduled an event so he wouldn’t miss an important episode of his favorite show!  Additionally, telenovelas have specific genres such as teen drama, historical, and working class drama.

This can be a very fun project for students.  Every year, I’m very impressed with the skill and creativity students display in their presentations.  However, if things are left until the last minute, or directions are not followed, it can prove to be a bit of a headache.  Students will have time to work on writing in class with their groups, but they will need to invest some time outside of class, as well (either working together, working independently and/or filming together).  I encourage parents to make note of the due dates and resources below to get an idea of what the expectations are.

Rough drafts of the script are due on Wednesday, February 18th.

Final drafts and presentations are due on Monday, March 9th.

The guidelines for the project are available here.

The rubric used for grading is available here.

Some background information on telenovela genres is available here.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

8th Grade Homework and Dropbox Information

There will be no journal entries due this week.

Your video reports (#6) are due tomorrow.

Also, I am now using a website called Dropbox where you will be able to access more materials for the class.  The following link will take you to the folder for 8th grade: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/duvg6733ehrnglv/AAD8yy2K7yUvYaqiDaolp1xAa?dl=0  This folder currently contains items such as the class contract, video report forms, the 8th Grade Grammar Toolbox, the instructions and rubric for journal entries, and the notes on direct object pronouns.  In the future, I will be sharing materials such as PowerPoint presentations to review at home if you choose to.

Because this week is a bit chaotic, with high school visits and the half day on Thursday, the quiz on direct object pronouns will no longer be on Wednesday in class.  Instead, it will be an online quiz on Quia that you must take by Friday morning.  You will have three possible attempts to take the quiz, and may use your notes.  As always, you must log in a second time to access the quiz, and I recommend you try it over the course of a few nights (don’t save your first attempt for Thursday night!)

Weekly Journals (8th Grade)

This year, 8th grade students will be writing a paragraph in Spanish in their journals (diarios) every week.  The instructions and grading rubric that will be used are included below.  This week’s journal topic is “Describe un miembro de tu familia” (Describe a member of your family) and will be due on Thursday, September 4th, although students will receive extra credit for handing it in on Wednesday or earlier.

Diarios: Instrucciones

Writing

Every week, you will be writing a journal entry in Spanish in your composition book.  Each entry should be one paragraph long (at least five sentences) and will respond to a brief prompt.   You will be graded on content (answering the question, staying on topic, providing supporting details), spelling and grammar.  Don’t stress too much about perfection; the goal is to write every week and to improve throughout the year.  Making a couple mistakes will not severely decrease your grade, although you should do your best, as you can see from the rubric below.

Organization

Above each journal entry, you should write a heading with the journal entry number (for example, Diario #4), the prompt question (¿Cuál es tu estación favorita y por qué?), and the date that you wrote it. (El 26 de septiembre).

You should also double-space your entry (skip lines) so that corrections can be made more easily.

Entries must be written in your journal.  Journal entries on separate paper will result in a reduced grade.

Handing in the Journal

These will be due on Thursday of each week.  You may hand them in at any time on any day in the assigned bin for your class.  You will receive extra credit for handing it in on Wednesday or sooner.

You will also receive the prompts for the following week, so that you may work ahead on next week’s entry if you would like to.

Sharing

On the Thursday that journal entries are due, you will read your journal entry with a partner as your daily warm-up.
